ST. SPIRIT: ‘Build A Life.’
In their own words:
‘Inspired by Loveless. From Crystal Palace. Recorded in a living room. Rehearsed under a train. Dark and wonderful. We are ST. SPIRIT.’
I have mixed feelings about this one. It’s certainly not the kind of music that I would listen to, but I’ve got to say there is a certain charm about it. It reminds me of the group of Scottish / Glasgow bands that were / are so popular and slowly and organically grew massive fan-bases through their blend of miserablist verses and anthemic choruses. You know, the likes of Frightened Rabbit, The Twilight Sad and even Mogwai.
The vocals here are quite pained through the verses, and perhaps there’s a bit of a Radiohead influence going on, but when the chorus explodes through, it’s all change. From here it’s like Coldplay / Snow Patrol in all their pomp with added thumping riffs and you can just see this track working so well n a live environment.
Like I say, it’s not really my bag, but when you consider these ST. SPIRIT guys are only nineteen years old, you have to think that if they can maintain and indeed build on this single, then we’re going to be hearing an awful lot more of them.
