BENSON: ‘Benson EP.’
This one only just arrived but I’m so glad it eventually found its way to LOUD HORIZON: firstly, because it’s so different to what’s around at the moment; secondly, because BENSON features two of the lads from one of my favourite punk bands in recent years, Guns On The Roof and thirdly, simply because it’s awesome!
(In addition to Danny and Joe of Guns On The Roof ‘fame,’ this Leeds based six-piece also boasts the talents of Dead Pets member, Stash.)
But before I learnt any of this from the accompanying press sheet, I played the three tracks on this, the band’s eponymous debut EP. And I don’t mind admitting I was blown away! In an age of ‘disposable,’ fad- following music, BENSON buck the trend and have produced a timeless disc of energy that must surely not only get feet tapping, but bodies bouncing! This is ‘good-time’ music alright!
Fusing ska and ‘proper’ soul (not what passes under that description these days) BENSON have come up with a sound that lies somewhere between Capdown, pre-‘Come On Eileen’ Dexy’s Midnight Runners, and Lightyear. Add to that the bluesy, gravel-voiced, Paulo Nutini type vocals of Jordan Clark, and you just know you have a winning formula.
Tell me you don’t like this ….. and you just ain’t got no soul, man!
COME ON!
