BEN CALVERT & THE SWIFTS: ‘Valpolicella Girl.’

Don’t do as I excitedly did and confuse Ben with Bob. To expect some chugging Hawkwind space-rock riffs and hear what I believe has been coined ‘post-folk’ (whatever the hell that is) is just a teencie wee bit disappointing.

Well – you know my feelings for most things ‘folk!’

But, in fairness despite its rather bohemian and ‘folk’ leanings, this is a pleasant little ditty, saved from being filed under the ‘twee’ banner by some excellent, dirty sounding, bluesy harmonica in the final minute or so. It’s a chirpy, catchy little tune that’s so well suited as a soundtrack to balmy summer evenings enjoying an al fresco bottle of wine.

In fact, the song was apparently inspired by an afternoon of drinking wine from the Valpolicella region of Verona, Italy with a circus girl from Bath. There’s a certain lovely  ‘innocence’ about this song, but it may have caught my attention more had it been about having a bath with a circus girl from the Valpolicella region of Verona, Italy!

(Released via the usual digital outlets on 14th May 2012)
