SPIRAL VORTEX: ‘Maia.’

Having recently posted about the latest release from Chilean psych rockers, Follakzoid, I returned from holiday to an e-mail from Maxi Aylwin, bass player with compatriots, SPIRAL VORTEX.
He wrote to advise that his band have just released their debut album, ‘Maia‘ and politely asked if I’d like to check it out. Of course, it would have been rude not to, and so I did:
Now, although I can’t see any reference to it on the Blow Your Mind Records website (the label that produces Follakzoid) I have managed to track down a few songs from the band, two of which I know are on this new album. The first is a live performance by the band towards the tail end of last year. You may have to be a bit of a psych / drone head like myself to really get into this, but I certainly feel it worthy of a blast here on LOUD HORIZON.
The second track is ‘Beat 13 20′ and I guess it’s on the album because an image of the cover accompanies the track. This one rather confusingly appears on Soundcloud as ‘Psy Rock Trance’ but that was posted over a year ago, so maybe it was just a ‘work in progress’ at that stage. Anyhow, this will probably appeal to a wider audience as it is a much more vibrant track. The opening rolling drums and crashing cymbals are augmented by swishing and swooshing atmospherics with ethereal-like background vocals peeking through. The intensity grows and the riffs gain strength as the instrumental track takes on a more ‘trippy’ form towards the last minute or so.
The final track I have for you is entitled ‘Holograma.’ I’m not entirely sure if this features on the album or not, but it may give a furher insight to what SPIRAL VORTEX is all about.
It all just goes to show that no matter where in the world you are, quality music is quality music!
