BLACK BOOKS: ‘Aquarena’ EP
Back in early / mid December I promised the LOUD HORIZON would bang up more music from Austin, Texas five-piece, BLACK BOOKS, just as soon as it became available. So here it is. (You get to know who you can depend on in this ‘music business!!)
The ‘Aquarena’ EP was recorded in the oppressive heat and record breaking Austin draught last summer: “Just from personal experience, the weather can really affect who you are, and when I listen back to the recording from last summer, I remember how hot, dry and exhausted the whole world looked” vocalist Ross Gilfillan says about the band’s endless summer of recording. Around this time Ross and wife and keyboardist Meg became parents and much of the lyrical content draws on his personal experiences of love and recently becoming a father.
Certainly, I stick by initial impression that this sort of ‘desert-rock’ blend of psych reminds me of Sleepy Sun. But that’s a good thing; a great thing! Right now, I can’t get enough!
(News of forthcoming UK shows will be posted on LOUD HORIZON once they have all been confirmed.
(‘Aquarena’ is released through Believe Recordings – in both digital and 10″ vinyl formats – on 11th February 2013)
